Citation Awarded by the President of the United States
      E X T R A C T
V--- Citation of Units in the
United States Forces in the Southwest Pacific Area. As authorized by
the executive Order 9075 (Sec. III, Bull. II, WD 1942) citation in the
name of the President of the United States, as public evidence of the
deserved honor and distinction, are awarded to the following named units:
           THE 49TH FIGHTER GROUP, UNITED
STATES ARMY, is cited for outstanding performance of duty in action during
the period of March 14, 1942 to August 26, 1942. Charged with the Air
Defense of the area near Darwin, Northern Territory, Australia, this unit,
although greatly outnumbered by enemy aircraft, boldly intercepted the
enemy on every attempted attack as extracted, far out of proportion to its
own losses. The fine record in combat and the number of airplanes kept in
action under difficult field conditions was made possible by the
determined courage, the uniformly high morale, and the technical ability
of the group as a whole, which contributed in a large measure to the
      successful defense of the area.
By order of the Secretary of War:

      Chief of Staff
      OFFICIAL:
